Sturdivant Mansion Alexander City, AL (Lake Martin) |
History of Sturdivant Mansion The community of Sturdivant no longer exist with the exception of the mansion itself. In the late 1800's a damn located on Lake Martin burst and flooded the whole community of Sturdivant. The entire community is now under Lake Martin. According to one Alex City engineer whom I spoke with on many occasions. This may have taken place in the late 1800's or so. I have no official data that tells us exactly when the flood took place but we do know it did indeed happen. What's left of Sturdivant Mansion is located just off interstate 280 North headed toward Montgomery in Alex City. The house is currently in complete ruins but restorations of this once beautiful home are underway. It took several weeks and many calls to the city of Alexander City to track down the actual location of this house. Located on private property you will require permission. Also the first 100 acres or so of the property is hunting land you should keep this in mind when setting up investigations during deer and turkey seasons. The Legend of Sturdivant Mansion The legend of Sturdivant Mansion is older then the year the flood happened. The legend tells of the home as being an Inn for travelers who passed through this area along the rail roads more then 200 years ago. Families would get off the train and stay at the house over night, and then, be on there way the next morning. It's said that one night a strange and psychotic man stayed at the house and with no regard to the sleeping person's inside, brutally murdered every person in the home. There is no official record to back this story up however for as long as Sturdivant Mansion has stood abandon by time and taken over by the elements there have been reports of paranormal activity here. From lights being seen in the upstairs windows where floors no longer exist . To the sounds of people talking and a lady who walks through the house in a white dress. Keeping in mind there is nothing but mortar and stone walls that are left, no floors, no ceilings, or roof. If these reports are true it would be hard to say it was a hoax. We are currently awaiting for another opportunity to investigate Sturdivant Mansion. The location makes it hard to get too without 4 wheel drive. It's on a small island/pennisula with one way in and one way out. 5 miles or so of dirt road lead up to the house. There is no electricity on the island/pennisula and not much else outside of the house itself . Upon request by the builders we where asked to wait until after some of the restorations where done before we went back out to investigate. As well as after the hunting season's due to the area being unsafe for ghost hunters as opposed to deer hunters! Evidence none at this time Non Paranormal Photos and Information |
